Who we are
Who We Are
Braid Health & Wellbeing is a leading day care provider for Livingston and the surrounding areas in West Lothian. We have grown over more than 40 years to become the largest day care centre in West Lothian and a highly valued resource. Our community provides us with significant support.
Our services improve life for our clients and those involved in their care. Clients remain our core focus and we will continue to strive to provide the highest quality of service and to satisfy the ever increasing demand. We will meet new challenges, continuing to invest in staff and volunteer training. Our services will be developed to ensure that we support older people to have as good a quality of life as possible by offering activities, learning opportunities and socialisation. We will support their physical and mental health, and well-being through a reduction in social isolation and engaging them in meaningful activity. We will engage older people in their local community by providing places in which to socialise, learn new skills or re-learn skills for daily living. We are registered with the Care Inspectorate and our Manager is registered with the Scottish Social Services Council.
Alongside our traditional Day Services, we now offer a range of Outreach Wellbeing Support Services. We also offer a meal delivery service aimed at tackling food poverty and supporting those who struggle to get to the shops or cook healthy meals for themselves. These services were developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and they have been a huge success. Therefore, we plan to invest in this service long term, so that we can support more people, in the way they want to be supported. Our Outreach Wellbeing Support Services include:
- Weekly phone call support
- Group digital support via Zoom
- One to one support within client’s homes
- Activity packs
- Nutritious 2 course meals cooked and delivered Monday to Friday to those in need across West Lothian (run in partnership with West Calder & Harburn Community Development Trust)
If you or anyone you know, is elderly and vulnerable, isolated or in need of some extra socialisation, please contact us directly on 01506 430615. We would love to help.
Braid House (now Braid Health and Wellbeing) was first established in 1980 in a house in Dedridge with a grant of £5000 from Lothian regional council. Clients were collected in a mini bus, provided with lunch which was cooked by the organisers and then after activities in the afternoon, clients returned home at 2pm. After 18 months in Dedridge the number of clients had increased to 36 and the house was no longer suitable. Another building became available near to the shopping centre and this was secured for the day centre through The Livingston Development Corporation so in March 1982 the day centre took on the name of Braid House in line with other buildings in the Dedridge area which were named after hills such as Lammermuir House and Pentland House. In 1984 Howden Health Centre moved to new premises at St Johns hospital and with the support of Lothian regional council and Livingston Development Corporation the old Howden Health Centre was renovated for Braid House Day Centre, now Braid Health & Wellbeing.
